We recognise that our students come with varying experiences of the sciences and starting points. The aim of the science curriculum is to build a solid understanding of the various aspects of science through the skills that scientists require, such as writing, forming explanations, investigating, facing challenges, building resilience, confidence, and the joy of discovery. Whenever possible, we provide hands-on experience in order that our students get firsthand experiences of concepts which promote better embedding of the linked theory – this occurs in our own specialist science laboratory and/or laboratories within the USP Trust.
Currently, Years 4, 5, 6, 7 follow the CUSP science units, while Years 8 and 9 cover the Biology, Chemistry and Physics content of the KS3 curriculum. All KS4 engage in GCSE Biology.
The science curriculum will give students the opportunity to:
- Think independently and raise questions about working scientifically and the knowledge and skills that it brings.
- Become confident and competent in the full range of practical skills, planning and carrying out scientific investigations.
- Understand the uses and implications of science today and for the future.
- Identify connections between subject areas and become aware of the big ideas underpinning scientific knowledge and understanding.
Develop and use a range of mathematical skills that can be applied to the world in which they live.
