PSHE (including RSE)
At Sir Bobby Robson PSHE lessons take place during tutor time and are also offered during the week at part of students’ timetable. A mindful approach is taken, bringing together PSHE elements encompassing relationships, health and wellbeing and living in the wider world. The statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) of PSHE elements include learning about sexual health, sexuality, healthy choices, diversity, and personal identity.
A whole-school approach is adopted with each year group working on the same theme at the same time; each theme approached in age-appropriate ways. For example, the theme ‘Relationships’ begins in KS3 (year 7) with building healthy relationships and develops into diversity, prejudice and bullying. In year 8, the topics of ‘Discrimination’ are explored with students, with them working towards being able to identify positive and negative relationships. By year 9, students will consider respectful relationship, leading towards learning about intimate relationships and consent.
In KS4, PSHE students will look towards studying and understanding media influence on relationships, and communication within relationships. They will also work on appreciating the implications of intimacy, plus how to identify ‘Extremism & Radicalisation’ and what steps can be taken to stay safe.
During the school year students will consider PSHE awareness dates such as World Mental Health Day (in October), and World Aids Day (in December), allowing them to encounter PSHE in the wider world. These subjects will also be covered from a whole school angle
It is hoped that as the year progresses and our school, as a community, becomes more ‘Covid safe’, we will be able to organise guest speakers to host workshops and assemblies.
As well as set lessons, the ethos of PSHE is embedded in everyday school life, including other learning opportunities such as student panels, offsite trips, and lessons. The overall aim is to promote wellbeing amongst our students and help them to be happy, successful, and to make good life choices.
