Our food technology curriculum is designed to apply the fundamental principles of understanding nutrition and healthy eating, equipping our pupils with the skills to cook and create independently and ultimately instilling a love of cooking. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill for pupils now and in later life. Throughout their time at school, we aim to encourage independent learning through practical participation. The subject’s design ensures that our students go beyond what their immediate tasks and challenges are, so that they have a wider understanding of environmental impacts on our food/ingredient choices and why there should be more encouragement to buy in season, fresh and local but not forgetting the impact food waste also has. Our students learn about the foods, dishes, and customs of different cultures and experience how these different cultural foods influence our everyday food choices. This enables our students to have a clear understanding of different cultural practices including religions and ethical beliefs and how these have influenced our western lives. Students also have a clear understanding relating to food choices and the impact on the environment relating to food waste.
Food Tech remains a core component of the Design and Technology curriculum from KS2 to KS3, and through specialist teaching we offer a BTEC Home Cooking Skills qualification pathway in KS4.
