The Citizenship Studies curriculum aims to empower all pupils to understand their role in society and to develop the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to participate positively in their communities and the wider world. The curriculum provides meaningful, real‑life learning experiences and builds clear links with other subjects to enhance pupils’ understanding of social responsibility, democracy and life in modern Britain.
The curriculum aims to enable all our students:
- To develop the knowledge and understanding needed to become informed, active and responsible citizens, with a secure grasp of key concepts such as democracy, justice, rights and responsibilities, and how these play out in everyday life.
- To build the personal skills required to express themselves confidently and appropriately, including the ability to discuss issues, listen to others, debate respectfully and challenge ideas safely, supporting their social and emotional development.
- To make sense of current events and topical issues by exploring how local, national and global decisions impact their own lives and the lives of others, while learning how to critically evaluate the information they encounter.
- To develop confidence, resilience and independence, enabling them to engage positively in their communities, manage difficult situations, and feel prepared for adult life, further education and employment.
- To understand their rights and responsibilities, including how to keep themselves safe, contribute to society, and make informed choices that promote their wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.
Our aim is for all pupils to leave us with a GCSE qualification in Citizenship Studies and, perhaps more importantly, the skills and self-belief to participate actively and confidently in life beyond school.
